Safety Requirements for Scissor Lifts
Based on both HRSDC and OSHA, scissor lifts or "movable scaffolds" are industrial equipment capable of raising heavy and big loads which are balanced well. They are responsible for transporting employees and their materials to and from high places in an efficient and safe manner. Since these mobile heavy machines are classified as heavy equipment, there are a lot of safety standards which apply to the use and maintenance of scissor lifts.
Movement
Scissor lifts can be moved on wheels or driven around to make them able to access various places. These pieces of equipment have been designed to move heavy loads, people and equipment up or down from height. For safety reasons, employees are not permitted to ride on a scissor lift during the relocation process. Generally, this is to help make certain that no one falls from the machine while it is being used. All staff working around a scissor lift as well as directly with the machinery need to be informed regarding its movement prior to the driver releasing the safety brake in order to make the lift move. Constant communication around heavy machinery helps keep the working environment and all those in it safe.
Fall Protection
To be able to ensure that workers prevent falling when using the equipment, there are some safety rules to consider regarding forklift safety standards. Although scissor lifts are not required to be enclosed, there are features like guard rails placed around the lift perimeter as well as a lock that should be engaged on the lift platform entrance whenever the lift is being used. There are also slip guards in position for added safety.
Another safety habit that workers should consider is to make sure that all loads are fastened securely prior to any lifting. This should ensure that nothing on the lift platform causes anybody to be injured.
